The function of sealing friction pairs grinding and polishing during maintenance of mechanical seals

In the maintenance of equipment mechanical seals, the friction pair of the seal is often deformed. In order to ensure the flatness of the friction pair, grinding and polishing work is required. Its intention is to grind and polish the surfaces of the rotary face & stationary seat to obtain a predetermined shape and surface roughness by using abrasives, abrasive fluids and abrasive tools generally. It is a high-precision processing method and a processing method for high-hardness materials. 

Why this method is adopted instead of other methods？The requirement of the flatness of the surfaces of the mechanical seal friction pair is high，coupling by its small roughness , it is difficult to achieve by general processing methods, and that’s why grinding and polishing is adopted.

What is grinding and polishing process？It is to contact the surface of the workpiece with the abrasive tool, and add abrasives between the two contacting faces. During grinding, the extremely thin surface layers are removed from the contacting surface to obtain a high-precision surface. Generally speaking，grinding and polishing improves the structure of the end faces of the mechanical seal sealing rings and make the surfaces wear-resistant . Its function is:
