Troubleshooting of mechanical seal
There are many failure phenomena of mechanical seals malfunctions, but they are mainly reflected in leakage.
The following will discuss the causes and treatment measures of the failure of the mechanical seal from the aspect of leakage at the end face of the seal.


1.Failure phenomenon——initial leaks:
(1)Deformation of rotary face or/and static seat: improper use, storage and installation; poor part structure and rigidity
(2)Scratches on rotary face or/and static seat surface(s)
(3)The flatness and roughness of the sealing surface(s) of the rotary face or/and static seat do(es)not meet the requirements
(4)Impurities are mixed into the sealing surface
(5)Insufficient running- in
Corresponding treatment measures:
(1)Improve the use, storage, and transportation methods, and check the force situation while installation;
(2)Improve use, storage, and check manufacturing quality
(3)Replace the rotary face or/and static seat or reprocess and regrind
(4) Clean the sealing surface of the mechanical seal and grind it if necessary
(5)Run-in as required


2.Failure phenomenon——rough sealing surface
(1) Poor lubrication and burns on the surface
(2)Team up with the same material
(3)Mix in impurities
Corresponding treatment measures:
(1)Supply enough lubricating oil, pay attention to the quality
(2)Replace the paired materials
(3)Remove and clean


3. Failure phenomenon——poor adaptability
(1)Insufficient spring force, spring corrosion, thinning or breaking, design problems
(2)The balance value is too large, and the sealing end face of the mechanical seal does not touch each other
(3)The shaft sealing ring of the mechanical seal has a large resistance, and the residue on the sealing ring is squeezed out to the sealing surface
(4)The shaft sealing ring cannot be moved due to the adhesion of dirt and sealing ring‘s residual deformation thus occurs.

4.Failure phenomenon——vibration of the rotary face and/or stationary seat
(1)Poor lubrication and noise
(2) The matching of rotary face and stationary seat materials is inappropriate, and the sealing surface is convex where abnormal wear occurs;
(3) The surface roughness of the rotary face and/or stationary seat does not meet the requirements,
(4) The shaft speed changes, and the end of the anti-rotation pin is against the anti-rotation groove or the shaft
Corresponding treatment measures:
(1)apply enough lubricating oil, replace the rotary face and stationary seat materials, and improve the circulation method of the medium when transporting low boiling point medium
(2)Change the material of the rotary face and stationary seat by using another material with good self-lubricating properties
(3)Improve surface quality
(4)Find out the reason, and make the shaft speed value come to a normal level, and increase the gap between the anti-rotation pin and the bottom of the groove (or shaft)


5. Failure phenomenon——abnormal wear of the sealing surface of the rotary face and the stationary seat (including partial wear)
(1)Poor lubrication, the sliding surface is severely worn in a short time, and impurities can be seen around the sliding surface.
(2)Impurities and scales invade the sealing surface of the mechanical seal, and make crystallization out, because of poor design
(3)Improper pair of rotary face and stationary seat materials
(4)medium causes deterioration and damage of rotary face and stationary seat materials.
(5) The end-to-surface pressure is too large.
(6)Poor roughness of sealing surface of the mechanical seal
(7)The inclined sealing surface causes eccentric wear of one contacting face

(2) Install a filter in the pipeline, change the sealing structure of the mechanical seal, and increase flushing measures

6.Failure phenomenon-gaps on the sealing surface
causes of the failure of the mechanical seal:
1) The fouling material gets stuck and deforms the end face
2) The rotary face and/or stationary seat are deformed (warped) at high temperature and under high pressure, and the axial displacement value is too big
3) Insufficient tracking of shaft displacement, excessive friction of shaft sealing ring
4) Scaling of cooling water

1) Improve the structure, improve the medium conditions, and prevent the fouling from gathering near the end surface;
2) Change the material and structure to reduce the amount of axial channeling until it reaches the specified numerical requirements
